What You'll Need

  • The Xfinity app or xFi app on your phone (iOS or Android) โ€” these have merged into a single Xfinity app
  • Your Xfinity account login (same as my.xfinity.com)
  • An xFi Gateway (Xfinity-provided modem/router combo) โ€” this guide applies to xFi Gateways, not third-party routers
โ„น๏ธ

xFi requires an Xfinity-provided Gateway

xFi parental controls only work with an Xfinity-provided xFi Gateway (modem/router provided by Comcast). If you use your own router connected to an Xfinity modem, xFi features won't be available for the devices behind your router. In that case, use the DNS filtering guide instead.

Part 1: Set Up a Device Profile for Your Child

xFi organises parental controls around People profiles. You create a profile for your child, add their devices to it, and then apply content filters to the profile.

Open the Xfinity app and sign in

Download the Xfinity app from the App Store or Play Store (previously called the xFi app โ€” it's now integrated). Sign in with your Xfinity account.

Go to Internet โ†’ My Network

From the home screen, tap Internet โ†’ My Network (or look for xFi if you have an older app version). You'll see all connected devices.

Tap 'Create a Profile'

Scroll down to Parental Controls โ†’ Create a Profile โ†’ give it a name (e.g. "Emma's Devices").

Add devices to the profile

You'll see a list of all currently connected devices. Select your child's phone, tablet, laptop, or any other device you want to control under this profile. Tap Save.

Part 2: Set Up Content Filters to Block YouTube

Open the profile you just created

In the Xfinity app โ†’ xFi section โ†’ People โ†’ tap your child's profile.

Go to Content Filtering

Tap Settings โ†’ Content Filtering (or Manage โ†’ Content Filters depending on app version).

Choose an age-appropriate filter level

xFi offers preset filter levels:

  • Kids โ€” blocks adult content, social media, many video streaming sites
  • Pre-Teen โ€” moderate filtering
  • Teen โ€” light filtering
  • Adult โ€” no filtering

Select Kids or Pre-Teen to start. Note: the Kids preset may already block YouTube. Test it after applying.

Add YouTube as a custom blocked site

Even if the preset doesn't block YouTube, you can add it manually. Look for Custom Blocked Sites or Block a Website within the content filter settings. Add:

  • youtube.com
  • youtu.be

Tap Save or Add.

Test the block

On your child's device, try visiting youtube.com in a browser or opening the YouTube app. If blocked correctly, it won't load.

Part 3: Set Bedtime and Downtime Schedules

Open the child's profile โ†’ Schedule

In the Xfinity app โ†’ your child's profile โ†’ Bedtime or Schedule (varies by app version).

Set up a Bedtime schedule

Toggle Bedtime Mode on. Set the times when internet pauses โ€” for example:

  • Pause at: 9:00 PM
  • Resume at: 7:00 AM

Select which days apply (all days, or weekdays only).

Set school day restrictions (optional)

Some xFi accounts support multiple schedule entries. Add a second schedule for school hours:

  • Pause at: 8:00 AM
  • Resume at: 3:30 PM
  • Days: Monday through Friday

Pause devices manually when needed

On the profile screen, tap Pause to immediately cut internet access to all devices in the profile. Use this for homework time.

Part 4: xFi Gateway Admin Panel (Advanced)

For settings not available in the app โ€” or if the app isn't working โ€” you can access the xFi Gateway admin panel directly.

Connect to your home network and open a browser

On a laptop or desktop connected to your Xfinity Wi-Fi, open a web browser.

Go to 10.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.1

Type 10.0.0.1 in the address bar. If that doesn't work, try 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. You should see the Xfinity Gateway login page.

Log in with admin credentials

Default credentials are usually:

  • Username: admin
  • Password: password

Or check the sticker on the back of your Gateway for the unique admin password (some models use a unique default).

Navigate to Parental Controls

Once logged in: Connected Devices โ†’ Parental Controls (or Advanced โ†’ Parental Controls depending on Gateway model).

Add keyword or URL filters

In the parental controls section, look for Blocked Keywords or URL Filtering. Add:

  • youtube
  • youtube.com
  • youtu.be

Enable the filter and save. This works at the gateway level โ€” regardless of device or app.

Part 5: xFi Advanced Security

xFi Advanced Security is an optional paid add-on ($5.99/month as of 2024) that adds threat protection and more granular content controls.

๐Ÿ’ฐ

xFi Advanced Security is a paid add-on

You don't need xFi Advanced Security to block YouTube โ€” the free content filtering described above is sufficient. Advanced Security adds real-time threat blocking and deeper analytics, but the basic parental controls are available without it.

If you have Advanced Security enabled: Xfinity app โ†’ xFi โ†’ Advanced Security โ†’ Parental Controls โ†’ per-device content category blocks give more granular control over video streaming categories.

How Kids Bypass This

Mobile data bypass: xFi controls only apply to devices connected to your Xfinity Wi-Fi. On mobile data (4G/5G), the phone bypasses your gateway entirely. Use Screen Time (iPhone) or Family Link (Android) for mobile coverage.

Connecting to a VPN: A VPN bypasses content filtering at the gateway. Block VPN apps via Screen Time or Family Link on each device.

Using a different network: If they connect to a neighbour's Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot, xFi has no control. Device-level parental controls are the solution.

The xFi app is on your phone: If your child has access to your phone and your Xfinity credentials, they could remove themselves from a profile or turn off content filters. Use a strong password on your Xfinity account and your phone.

Profile confusion: If a device is connected to your home network but not assigned to any profile, xFi's parental controls don't apply to it. Periodically review unassigned devices in the My Network section and add them to the appropriate profile.

Counter-Measures

Add DNS filtering as a second layer: Change the xFi Gateway's DNS to CleanBrowsing (185.228.168.168) for a redundant YouTube block that works even if the content filter is bypassed. Do this via the admin panel (10.0.0.1 โ†’ Advanced โ†’ DNS).

Review the connected device list weekly: In the Xfinity app โ†’ My Network, new devices appear when they connect. A new device could be a friend's phone or a school tablet connecting without restrictions. Assign new devices to profiles promptly.

Use Bedtime Mode every night: Even with content filtering, cutting internet access during sleep hours eliminates late-night YouTube browsing entirely. Set Bedtime Mode and leave it on permanently.

Combine with device-level controls: xFi + Screen Time (iPhone) or Family Link (Android) covers both the home network and mobile data.
