What You'll Need

  • A TP-Link Deco mesh system (any model)
  • The Deco app on your phone (iOS or Android)
  • Your TP-Link account (required to use the Deco app)
  • About 10 minutes

TP-Link Deco is managed entirely through the Deco app — there is no traditional web admin panel for parental controls. Blocking YouTube is done through HomeShield, Deco's security and parental control system.

HomeShield free vs Pro

The HomeShield Basic tier (free) includes malware protection and basic parental controls: content category filtering is available but limited to broader categories. HomeShield Pro (~$2.99/month) unlocks specific URL blocking, app filtering, detailed reports, and custom schedules. DNS filtering (free, covered in Part 3) is a reliable free alternative to HomeShield Pro for blocking YouTube.

Part 1: Set Up Parental Controls in the Deco App

Open the Deco app and tap Home Security or the shield icon

Open the Deco app. On the home screen, tap Home Security or the shield icon. If you see a HomeShield banner, tap it.

Go to Parental Controls → Add Profile

Tap Parental ControlsAdd Profile (or the + button). Enter your child's name and select their age range.

Add their devices to the profile

Tap Add Devices → select your child's phone, tablet, laptop, or any device they use. Multiple devices can be added to one profile.

Part 2: Block YouTube with HomeShield Content Filter

Free Tier — Category Blocking

In your child's profile, tap Content Filter

Tap your child's profile → Content Filter (or Blocked Content).

Block the Video Streaming category

You'll see content categories. Find Online Video or Video Streaming → toggle it to Blocked. This blocks YouTube and other video streaming sites at the category level.

Note: On the free tier, you're blocking the whole category. If you want to allow Netflix or other streaming services but block only YouTube, that granularity requires HomeShield Pro (specific URL blocking).

Save

Tap Save or confirm. The filter is active immediately on all devices in this profile.

HomeShield Pro — Block YouTube Specifically by URL

If you have HomeShield Pro:

Go to your child's profile → Blocked URLs

Tap the profile → Blocked URLsAdd → enter:

  • youtube.com
  • youtu.be
  • googlevideo.com

Tap Save. Only YouTube is blocked; other video streaming services remain accessible.

Part 3: DNS Filtering (Free — Router-Wide YouTube Block)

This is the best free alternative if you don't want HomeShield Pro. It blocks YouTube on every device on your network regardless of profile assignment.

Open the Deco app → More → Advanced → DNS

Tap the More tab (bottom right) → AdvancedDNS. (On some Deco versions: tap the top menu → InternetDNS.)

Switch from Auto to Custom DNS

Tap DNS Server → select Custom.

Enter CleanBrowsing Family DNS

  • Primary DNS: 185.228.168.168
  • Secondary DNS: 185.228.169.168

Tap Save. Deco pushes the new DNS to all nodes within about 30 seconds.

Test the block

On any device connected to your Deco Wi-Fi, open a browser and try youtube.com. It should fail to load.

Part 4: Set Internet Schedules (Time Limits)

Even on the free tier, you can set a schedule to pause internet access for a profile.

Go to your child's profile → Time Controls

Tap the profile → Time Controls (or Internet Time).

Set daily screen time limit or bedtime

Toggle Time Limit on → set the daily maximum hours of internet access. Or toggle Bedtime → set the time range when internet is paused (e.g. 9pm–7am).

Pause internet immediately

In the profile view, tap Pause to immediately cut internet access for all devices in this profile. Tap again to resume.

How Kids Bypass This

DNS bypass via device settings: If your child sets a manual DNS server on their phone (Android Private DNS or via VPN), they bypass the Deco DNS filter. The HomeShield category filter (applied at the network level, not just DNS) is harder to bypass than DNS-only blocking. Use both for strongest protection.

TP-Link account access: The Deco app requires your TP-Link account login. If your child gains access to your account, they can modify or delete filter profiles from any device. Enable two-factor authentication on your TP-Link account and don't store credentials where your child can find them.

Profile assignment requires knowing your child's devices: If your child connects with a new device not assigned to their profile, HomeShield per-profile filtering won't catch it. DNS filtering covers all devices regardless.

Mobile data bypass: Deco controls only cover your home Wi-Fi. Pair with Screen Time (iPhone) or Family Link (Android) for device-level coverage on mobile data and other networks.

Guest network: Deco's guest network may use separate DNS settings. Check that guest network DNS is also set to CleanBrowsing if your child has access to it.

🔨

Counter-Measures

DNS filtering is the best free option on TP-Link Deco. HomeShield's category blocking (free tier) is good but catches the broad Video Streaming category. DNS filtering via CleanBrowsing is more specific, completely free, and covers every device without profile assignment.

HomeShield Pro is worth it if you want per-child management: The $2.99/month cost gives you specific URL blocking, usage reports, and content categories per child profile. If you have multiple children with different needs, it's more convenient than DNS-only blocking.

Pair with device-level controls: Router blocking covers home Wi-Fi. Add Screen Time (iPhone) or Family Link (Android) to cover mobile data, school networks, and friends' houses.
