How to Block YouTube on eero (Amazon eero Mesh, 2026)
Block YouTube on Amazon eero mesh Wi-Fi using eero app Profiles and DNS filtering. Free options available; eero Plus adds category filtering. Updated for 2026.
What You'll Need
- An Amazon eero mesh system (any generation)
- The eero app on your phone (iOS or Android)
- Your Amazon account (eero uses Amazon account sign-in)
- About 10 minutes
eero has no traditional web admin panel — everything is managed through the eero app. Parental controls are handled via Profiles, where you assign devices to a profile for a family member and then control their internet access.
eero Plus vs free eero
The free eero app lets you pause the internet per device or profile and set bedtime/schedule blocks. Blocking YouTube specifically by URL or category requires eero Plus (~$2.99/month or $29.99/year) which adds content category filtering. DNS filtering (covered in Part 3) is a free alternative that blocks YouTube for all devices.
Part 1: Set Up a Profile for Your Child
Open the eero app and go to Discover → Profiles
Open the eero app → tap the Discover tab (or home screen) → tap Profiles or Add a Profile.
Create a profile for your child
Tap Create Profile → enter your child's name → tap Add.
Add their devices to the profile
Tap your child's profile → Add Devices → select their phone, tablet, laptop, or any device they use. You can add multiple devices to one profile.
Part 2: Block YouTube with eero Plus (Category Filtering)
If you have eero Plus:
Go to your child's Profile → Content Filters
In the eero app, tap your child's profile → Content Filters.
Block the Video & Music category
Toggle Video & Music (or Video Streaming) to Blocked. This blocks YouTube and other streaming platforms.
For more granular control, look for Custom or Blocked Sites and add:
youtube.comyoutu.begooglevideo.com
Save the filter
Changes apply immediately — no router restart needed.
Part 3: DNS Filtering (Free — Blocks YouTube for All Devices)
This is the best free option. Instead of using eero's paid category filtering, you point all DNS requests through a free filtering service. Every device on your network is covered — no profile needed.
Open eero app → Settings (gear icon) → Network Settings → DNS
Tap Settings (gear icon, top right) → Network Settings → DNS.
Select Custom DNS
Tap Custom DNS. Two fields appear for primary and secondary DNS.
Enter CleanBrowsing Family DNS
- DNS 1:
185.228.168.168 - DNS 2:
185.228.169.168
Tap Save. eero will push the new DNS settings to all nodes — this takes about 30 seconds.
Test the block
On any device connected to your eero Wi-Fi, try opening youtube.com. It should fail to load.
NextDNS with eero: more control than CleanBrowsing
eero natively integrates with NextDNS (eero app → Settings → DNS → NextDNS). NextDNS is free for up to 300,000 queries/month and lets you configure exactly which domains are blocked via a dashboard. See the NextDNS guide for setup.
Part 4: Pause Internet Access on Schedule (Free)
Even without eero Plus, you can schedule when a device or profile has no internet at all.
Go to your child's Profile → Schedule
Tap your child's profile → Schedule (or Sleep Schedule).
Set bedtime or homework hours
Toggle Sleep Schedule → set the days and time range when internet is paused (e.g. 9pm–7am on weekdays). During this window, all internet access is blocked for devices in this profile.
Use 'Pause' for immediate blocking
To pause internet right now: tap the profile → Pause. The internet stays paused until you un-pause it. Useful for meal times or screen-free periods.
How Kids Bypass This
eero DNS setting can be bypassed with device-level DNS: If your child configures a manual DNS server on their phone (e.g. using Android's Private DNS feature or a VPN), they bypass the eero DNS filter. This is a known limitation of DNS-based filtering. Add device-level controls (Screen Time on iPhone, Family Link on Android) as a second layer.
Profile assignment requires knowing what devices your child uses: If your child connects with a new device (a friend's phone, a second tablet) that isn't assigned to their profile, it won't be filtered. Router-wide DNS filtering covers all devices regardless of profile assignment.
Pausing internet only works if you're home (or have the app): The eero Pause and Schedule features work through the app. They're reliable, but require your Amazon account and app access to manage.
Amazon account security: eero management is tied to your Amazon account. If your child gains access to your Amazon account credentials, they could log into the eero app and change settings. Enable two-factor authentication on your Amazon account and don't store the login credentials where your child can find them.
Mobile data bypass: eero controls only cover your home Wi-Fi. On mobile data, your child bypasses the eero network entirely. Use Screen Time (iPhone) or Family Link (Android) for full coverage.
Counter-Measures
DNS filtering is the best free tool on eero: The free eero app has limited URL-specific blocking. Setting CleanBrowsing or NextDNS as your router DNS is free, covers every device on your network, and blocks YouTube reliably.
Consider eero Plus if you want app-based control: The $2.99/month subscription gives you category-based filtering with a simple toggle, managed through the same app you already use. It's more convenient than manual DNS if you want to adjust categories frequently.
Pair with device-level controls: Router blocking covers home Wi-Fi. Screen Time (iPhone) or Family Link (Android) covers your child's phone on mobile data and other networks.
