Block YouTube with Microsoft Family Safety (Windows & Xbox, 2026)
Use Microsoft Family Safety to block YouTube on Windows 10/11, Xbox, and Android. Free with a Microsoft account. Step-by-step setup guide. Updated for 2026.
What Is Microsoft Family Safety?
Microsoft Family Safety is Microsoft's free parental supervision service. It lets you manage a child's Microsoft account from your phone or browser โ blocking websites, setting screen time limits, restricting apps, and monitoring activity across their devices.
What it covers well:
- Windows 10 and Windows 11 (via Edge browser and Windows account controls)
- Xbox (YouTube blocking, app/game age restrictions)
- Android phones (via the Microsoft Launcher app and Edge for Android)
Where it's limited:
- iOS/Mac coverage is minimal โ see Screen Time for Apple devices
- Chrome and Firefox on Windows don't respect Microsoft Family Safety web filtering โ Edge-only
- Works best when your child uses Microsoft Edge as their browser
Microsoft 365 Family adds extra features
The free tier of Microsoft Family Safety covers web filtering, screen time, and app/game restrictions. A Microsoft 365 Family subscription (~$109.99/year for up to 6 people) adds spending reports, more detailed activity history, and location sharing. The free tier is sufficient for blocking YouTube.
Part 1: Create a Child Account and Add to Family
Go to account.microsoft.com/family
On your computer or phone, navigate to account.microsoft.com/family and sign in with your Microsoft account.
Add a child to your family
Click Add a family member โ Create an account for a child. Follow the prompts to create a Microsoft account for your child with their name and date of birth.
If your child already has a Microsoft account, click Add someone I know and enter their email.
Accept the invitation on their device
Your child receives an email invitation. On their device, accept it to link their account to your family group.
Part 2: Block YouTube via Content Filters
Open the Microsoft Family Safety app
Download the Microsoft Family Safety app on your phone (iOS or Android, free) and sign in with your Microsoft account. Or use the web version at account.microsoft.com/family.
Select your child's profile โ Content filters
Tap your child's name โ Content filters (or Web and search โ Content filters).
Toggle 'Filter inappropriate websites and searches' On
Enable this toggle. This activates Bing SafeSearch and blocks known adult content.
Note: This alone doesn't block YouTube โ YouTube isn't classified as inappropriate content. Continue to the next step.
Add YouTube to the Blocked sites list
Scroll to Blocked sites โ click Add website โ add each URL:
youtube.comyoutu.bemusic.youtube.comwww.youtube-nocookie.com
Click Save. In Microsoft Edge on their Windows PC, these URLs will show a blocked page.
Enable 'Only use allowed websites' for younger children
For maximum control (younger children): toggle Only use allowed websites โ On. Then manually add the specific sites they're allowed to visit. YouTube will be unreachable in Edge by default.
Part 3: Block YouTube on Windows (Non-Edge Browsers)
Critical limitation: Microsoft Family Safety web filtering only applies to Microsoft Edge. Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and other browsers on Windows do not respect these restrictions.
Remove Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers from their PC
Open the Start menu โ Settings โ Apps โ Installed Apps โ find Chrome, Firefox, or any other browser โ uninstall it.
Block new browser installations
In Microsoft Family Safety โ Content filters โ you can block specific apps from being launched. Add Chrome and Firefox to the blocked apps list if they get reinstalled.
Alternatively: in the App and game limits section, you can restrict which apps are allowed entirely.
Ensure their Windows account is a Standard account, not Administrator
A child with an Administrator Windows account can install Chrome, undo browser blocks, and modify family settings. Check: Settings โ Accounts โ Family & other users โ select their account โ confirm it shows Standard User. If it says Administrator, click and change it.
Part 4: Block YouTube on Xbox
Sign in to your Microsoft Family account on the Xbox
Ensure your child's Xbox is signed in with their Microsoft account (the one linked to your family group).
Open Microsoft Family Safety app โ select their Xbox
In the Family Safety app, select your child's profile. Under Devices, their Xbox should be listed.
Set content and app restrictions
App & game limits โ set the maximum age rating for apps to an appropriate level. YouTube is rated for older teens โ setting age restrictions below this prevents it from being used.
Alternatively, use the blocked sites list from Part 2 โ YouTube.com will be blocked on the Xbox's Edge browser.
Block the YouTube app on Xbox specifically
In the App & game limits section of the Family Safety app, you can block specific apps by name. Find YouTube and toggle it to blocked.
Part 5: Set Screen Time Limits
Set daily limits per device
Family Safety app โ your child's profile โ Screen time โ select a device โ set daily time limits (or separate limits for school days vs weekends).
Set a schedule
Toggle Use a schedule โ block hours when the device shouldn't be used (e.g. school hours 9amโ3pm, bedtime 9pmโ7am).
How Kids Bypass This
Edge-only filtering is the key limitation: Microsoft Family Safety web blocking only works in Microsoft Edge. If your child uses Chrome or Firefox, they can access youtube.com without restriction. The solution is to remove other browsers and block their reinstallation โ or use DNS filtering at the router level, which covers all browsers.
Standard vs Administrator account: If your child's Windows account has Administrator privileges, they can disable Family Safety in Windows settings, install other browsers, and undo restrictions. Always ensure child accounts are Standard users.
Private browsing in Edge: InPrivate mode in Edge does respect Microsoft Family Safety content filters โ blocks still apply in private browsing.
Microsoft account password access: If your child can access your Microsoft account email and password, they could modify Family Safety settings. Secure your Microsoft account with a strong password and two-factor authentication (account.microsoft.com โ Security โ Advanced security options โ Two-step verification).
Android coverage is limited: On Android, Family Safety monitoring requires Microsoft Launcher and Edge browser installation. It doesn't have the same app-level control as Google Family Link โ use Family Link for Android devices instead.
Counter-Measures
Pair Microsoft Family Safety with router DNS filtering: Family Safety's web blocking is Edge-only. Adding CleanBrowsing or OpenDNS DNS filtering at the router level blocks youtube.com in every browser โ Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and any other app. See the DNS filtering guide.
Ensure their account is Standard, not Administrator. This single step makes everything else much harder to bypass.
Microsoft Family Safety is the right tool for Xbox: For Xbox specifically, Microsoft's family controls are well-integrated and effective. App and game restrictions, content ratings, and screen time work reliably on Xbox.
Use Google Family Link for Android, Screen Time for Apple. Microsoft Family Safety works best within the Microsoft ecosystem. For non-Windows, non-Xbox devices, use the platform-native tools.
