What Is Firewalla?

Firewalla is a small hardware device that plugs into your home network and provides network-level security, ad blocking, and parental controls — with no monthly subscription for core features.

Models available:

| Model | Price (approx) | Best for | |---|---|---| | Firewalla Purple | ~$119–149 | Most homes — works as a router or behind your existing router | | Firewalla Gold | ~$219 | Advanced users, higher throughput, supports more complex network configs | | Firewalla Gold Pro | ~$449 | Prosumer/business use | | Firewalla Blue Plus | ~$109 | Simpler setup, slightly lower performance than Purple |

All models share the same app and core feature set. The Purple is the most commonly recommended for home use.

No subscription fees for core features including parental controls and YouTube blocking. Some premium features (e.g. advanced threat intelligence) may have optional subscription tiers.

How Firewalla Works

Firewalla uses a combination of DNS filtering and network-layer blocking:

  • In Simple Mode (DHCP mode): Firewalla sits on your existing network. It uses ARP spoofing to intercept traffic and apply rules, similar to Circle Home Plus.
  • In Router Mode: Firewalla acts as your router, replacing or sitting between your modem and your existing router.

For most home users: Simple Mode (just plug in and go) is sufficient.

Part 1: Set Up Firewalla

Download the Firewalla app

Download the Firewalla app on your phone (iOS or Android). Create a free Firewalla account.

Plug Firewalla into your router's LAN port

Use an Ethernet cable to connect Firewalla to one of the LAN/Ethernet ports on your router (not the WAN port). Plug in the power cable.

Follow the in-app setup wizard

Open the Firewalla app → tap + → follow the pairing instructions. The app will detect Firewalla on your network, confirm Simple Mode, and complete the setup. This takes about 5 minutes.

Verify connected devices are detected

After setup, the app shows a list of devices on your network. All devices connected to your home Wi-Fi will be visible.

Part 2: Create a Child Profile and Add Their Devices

Go to the Firewalla app → Family Protect (or Parental Controls)

In the app, look for the Family Protect section or tap the shield/family icon. Tap + to add a child profile.

Create a profile for your child

Enter their name and age. Firewalla will suggest an appropriate content filter level based on their age.

Assign their devices to the profile

Tap Add Devices → select every device your child uses (phone, tablet, laptop, game console). Devices assigned to the profile will have the profile's rules applied to them.

Part 3: Block YouTube

Method A: Block YouTube via the Family Profile

In the child's profile, go to Rules → Add Rule

Tap the child's profile → Rules (or Block/Allow) → Add a Rule.

Create a block rule for YouTube

Set:

  • Action: Block
  • Target: Domain
  • Domain: youtube.com

Add the rule. Repeat for:

  • youtu.be
  • googlevideo.com
  • music.youtube.com

Save. YouTube is now blocked for all devices in this profile.

Method B: Block YouTube Network-Wide (All Devices)

Go to Firewalla app → Rules → Add Network-Wide Rule

In the main app menu: Rules (the scales icon) → Add Rule → set:

  • Apply to: All Devices (or your whole network)
  • Action: Block
  • Target: Domain Group or specific domains

Add the YouTube domains as above.

Or use a pre-built category block

Firewalla has pre-built category blocks. Look for Video, Social Media, or Video Streaming and toggle it to blocked for the child's profile or network-wide.

Part 4: DNS Filtering Mode (Alternative Setup)

Firewalla can also act as a DNS server for your network, providing DNS-based filtering.

Go to Firewalla app → Settings → DNS over HTTPS (or DNS Filtering)

In the app settings, find the DNS or DNS Filtering section.

Enable DNS filtering and select a filter

Firewalla supports integration with third-party DNS filtering services (NextDNS, etc.) or its own DNS filtering. Enable it and choose a filtering profile that includes YouTube.

Part 5: Set Schedules and Time Limits

In the child's profile, tap Schedule or Time Limits

You can set:

  • Daily time limits: Maximum internet usage per day
  • Bedtime: Hours when internet access is paused for this profile
  • Pause internet now: Immediately suspend internet for all their devices

These apply across all devices in the profile simultaneously.

How Kids Bypass This

Simple Mode uses ARP spoofing — can be bypassed with static IP: If a device sets a static IP address that Firewalla doesn't know about, it may not route through Firewalla's monitoring. Most children don't know how to do this, but technically sophisticated users can. Router Mode (Firewalla as the actual router) is harder to bypass.

Connecting to a mobile hotspot: If your child creates a Wi-Fi hotspot from their phone (using mobile data) and connects their tablet or laptop to it, that device bypasses Firewalla entirely. Use Screen Time or Family Link on all devices.

Mobile data on the phone itself: Firewalla controls what passes through your home network. A phone on 4G/5G bypasses Firewalla. Add Screen Time (iPhone) or Family Link (Android) for device-level coverage on mobile data.

VPN apps: A VPN on a device can encrypt traffic so Firewalla can't inspect it. Block VPN app installation via Screen Time (iPhone) or Family Link (Android).

Physical access to the Firewalla device: If your child can unplug or factory reset the Firewalla, all controls are removed. Keep it in an inaccessible location.

Counter-Measures

Firewalla's hardware approach is more tamper-resistant than software: Unlike parental control apps that can be uninstalled, Firewalla operates at the network level. It can't be bypassed by deleting an app or clearing app data.

No subscription makes it cost-effective long-term: The upfront hardware cost ($109–$219) replaces ongoing subscription fees from services like Circle (~$9.99/month = $120/year). Firewalla pays for itself within 1–2 years.

Pair with device-level controls: Firewalla covers your home network. Add Screen Time (iPhone) or Family Link (Android) for coverage on mobile data and other networks.

Firewalla Gold in Router Mode is the most robust setup: If you're willing to configure Firewalla as your actual router, it provides the strongest protection — devices can't bypass it the way they potentially can with Simple Mode.
