What You'll Need

  • Your TPG-supplied router or modem
  • A device connected to your TPG Wi-Fi
  • About 10–15 minutes

TPG (Telecom Pacific Group) is one of Australia's major internet service providers. TPG supplies different hardware depending on your plan and connection type (NBN, FTTB, or older ADSL). Common supplied hardware includes TP-Link, Sagemcom, and Huawei routers. TPG does not offer a branded account-level parental control service like Sky Broadband Shield — DNS filtering on your router is the recommended approach.

TPG-supplied router models

Your router model is printed on a sticker on the device. Common TPG-supplied models:

  • TP-Link Archer VR1600v / VR2100 / VR600 — VDSL/NBN
  • Sagemcom F@ST series — some NBN plans
  • Huawei HG659 — older NBN and FTTB plans

Setup steps are covered for all major variants below.

Part 1: Access the TPG Router Admin Panel

Find your router's IP address

Open a browser on a device connected to your TPG Wi-Fi. Try:

  • 192.168.1.1 — TP-Link, Sagemcom, and most TPG-supplied routers
  • 192.168.0.1 — some variants
  • tplinkwifi.net — TP-Link Archer models

If none work, check your device:

  • Windows: Command Prompt → ipconfig → Default Gateway
  • Mac: System Settings → Network → Wi-Fi → Details → Router
  • iPhone: Settings → Wi-Fi → tap network name → Router

Log in to the router admin panel

Default credentials for common TPG-supplied routers:

| Router Model | Username | Password | |---|---|---| | TP-Link Archer VR1600v | admin | admin | | TP-Link Archer VR2100 | admin | admin | | Sagemcom F@ST | admin | printed on sticker | | Huawei HG659 | telecomadmin | admintelecom or on sticker |

If you've changed the password and forgotten it, hold the Reset button for 10 seconds to factory reset the router (this clears your Wi-Fi settings too).

Part 2: DNS Filtering (Recommended for All TPG Routers)

DNS filtering is the most reliable method. It works on all TPG router models and blocks YouTube for every connected device.

TP-Link Archer VR1600v / VR2100 (Blue Archer UI)

Go to Advanced → Network → DHCP Server

In the TP-Link admin panel: AdvancedNetworkDHCP Server.

Set DNS to CleanBrowsing Family

Find Primary DNS and Secondary DNS fields:

  • Primary DNS: 185.228.168.168
  • Secondary DNS: 185.228.169.168

Click Save.

Also update WAN DNS if available

AdvancedWAN → find your connection profile → look for DNS fields → set the same CleanBrowsing addresses. This ensures both outgoing and DHCP DNS use the filtered addresses.

Reboot the router

AdvancedSystem ToolsReboot. After restart, youtube.com will not load on any connected device.

Sagemcom F@ST Series

Go to Advanced → Local Network → DNS

In the Sagemcom interface: AdvancedLocal NetworkDNS (or DHCP).

Enter CleanBrowsing Family DNS

  • Primary DNS Server: 185.228.168.168
  • Secondary DNS Server: 185.228.169.168

Click Apply.

Reboot the router

AdvancedManagementReboot, or power-cycle the router.

Huawei HG659

Go to Home Network → DNS

In the Huawei admin panel: Home NetworkDNS (or Basic → DHCP).

Set custom DNS servers

  • Primary DNS Server: 185.228.168.168
  • Secondary DNS Server: 185.228.169.168

Click Save and restart the router.

Part 3: URL Filtering on TP-Link Archer Models

TP-Link Archer routers (supplied by TPG) have parental controls for per-device URL filtering — useful if you want to block YouTube on specific devices while leaving other devices unrestricted.

Go to Advanced → Parental Controls

In the TP-Link admin: AdvancedParental ControlsAdd.

Add your child's device

Select their device from the connected device list (or enter their device's MAC address).

Add YouTube to the blocked URL list

Under Content RestrictionBlocked Content, add:

  • youtube.com
  • youtu.be
  • googlevideo.com

Set Effective Time to All Day. Click Save.

How Kids Bypass This

Mobile data bypass: TPG router filtering only covers your home Wi-Fi. On mobile data, your child bypasses the home router. Use Screen Time (iPhone) or Family Link (Android) for device-level coverage.

Default admin credentials are publicly documented: TP-Link admin/admin and Huawei telecomadmin/admintelecom are widely known. Change your admin password immediately after setting up filtering: Advanced → System Tools → Administration → Account Management (TP-Link) or Maintenance → Account (Huawei).

Connecting to other networks: Your child is not filtered when connected to school Wi-Fi, public hotspots, or a mobile hotspot. Router filtering is home-only.

TPG doesn't offer account-level filtering: Unlike Telstra and some other ISPs, TPG doesn't have a parental control service you manage from your account portal. All filtering must be done on the router.

Counter-Measures

DNS filtering is the best approach for TPG: Without an ISP-level parental control service, router DNS filtering is your primary tool. CleanBrowsing Family DNS (185.228.168.168) is free and blocks YouTube (and adult content) for every device on your network.

Change the admin password from the default. TP-Link and Huawei routers have well-known default credentials. Changing the admin password prevents your child from logging into the router and modifying filtering settings.

Pair with device-level controls: Router filtering covers home Wi-Fi only. Add Screen Time (iPhone) or Family Link (Android) for full coverage including mobile data.
