Block YouTube on Netgear Router (Nighthawk & Orbi Guide)
Block YouTube on a Netgear router using Netgear Armor, the Nighthawk app, and the router admin panel. Covers Nighthawk routers and Orbi mesh systems.
What You'll Need
- Your Netgear router (Nighthawk, Orbi, or other Netgear model)
- The Nighthawk app (for Nighthawk routers) or Orbi app (for Orbi mesh) โ iOS or Android
- Access to the Netgear router admin panel at
routerlogin.net - About 15 minutes
Netgear routers offer parental controls through two different systems:
- Netgear router admin panel (routerlogin.net) โ built-in, free, basic URL blocking
- Netgear Armor (powered by Bitdefender) โ paid subscription, more advanced content filtering per device
Both approaches are covered below. Start with the admin panel method (free).
Method 1: Netgear Admin Panel โ Block Sites (Free)
Step 1: Access the Router Admin Panel
Open a browser on a device connected to your Netgear Wi-Fi
Use a laptop or desktop for the easiest experience.
Go to routerlogin.net or 192.168.1.1
Type routerlogin.net directly into your browser's address bar. If that doesn't work, try 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
Log in with admin credentials
Default credentials:
- Username:
admin - Password:
password
If you've changed these and forgotten them, use the Nighthawk or Orbi app to log in, or factory reset the router (hold the reset button for 10 seconds โ this erases all settings).
Step 2: Block YouTube via Parental Controls
Go to Security โ Block Sites (Nighthawk routers)
In the admin panel left menu: Security โ Block Sites. If you have an older Netgear router: Advanced โ Security โ Block Sites.
Enable keyword or URL blocking
You'll see options to block by keyword or by specific URL. Choose Per Schedule or Always for the blocking type.
Under keyword blocking, add:
youtubeyoutu.be
Under URL blocking (if available separately), add:
www.youtube.commusic.youtube.com
Set a schedule (optional)
If you want to block YouTube only during certain hours (e.g. school hours or after 9pm), set the schedule here. For full blocking, select Always.
Save and test
Click Apply and wait for the router to update. On any connected device, try youtube.com โ it should fail to load or redirect to a blocked page.
Step 3: Block Sites by MAC Address (Per-Device Control)
For per-device blocking (e.g. block YouTube on your child's laptop but not your own), use Netgear's access control tied to MAC addresses.
Go to Security โ Access Control
In the admin panel: Security โ Access Control (or Advanced โ Security โ Access Control).
Enable access control and find your child's device
Turn on Turn on Access Control. A list of connected devices appears with their MAC addresses and IP addresses. Identify your child's device.
Block the device or set restrictions
Select your child's device โ Edit โ you can block internet access entirely, or set scheduled access hours. For YouTube-specific blocking (not all internet), use the Block Sites method above combined with device-level parental controls.
Method 2: Netgear Orbi โ Additional Parental Controls
Orbi mesh systems have an additional parental control option: Circle Smart Parental Controls (built into some Orbi models) and the standard Block Sites feature.
Circle Parental Controls on Orbi (If Available)
Check if your Orbi has Circle
In the Orbi app or admin panel, look for Parental Controls โ Circle. Orbi models RBK50, RBK852, and others include Circle integration.
Set up Circle profiles
If Circle is available, tap Circle โ Create Profile for your child. Add their devices.
Block YouTube in Circle
In the Circle profile, go to Filter Level โ select a preset (Kids, Teen, etc.) that blocks video streaming, or go to History โ find YouTube โ tap Block.
Circle requires a subscription for advanced features
The basic Circle integration in Orbi is free. Advanced features โ like filtering history, custom categories, and off-network controls โ require a Circle subscription (~$4.99/month). The free tier is sufficient for basic YouTube blocking.
Standard Block Sites on Orbi
If your Orbi doesn't have Circle, or you prefer not to use it, the standard Block Sites method from Method 1 works on all Netgear Orbi systems too:
Admin panel โ Advanced โ Security โ Block Sites โ add YouTube keywords.
Method 3: Netgear Armor (Paid โ Bitdefender Powered)
Netgear Armor is a subscription service (~$99.99/year or included with some Nighthawk models for a trial period) that adds Bitdefender-powered security and parental controls.
Netgear Armor is optional โ the free methods above are sufficient for most families
You do NOT need Netgear Armor to block YouTube. The admin panel Block Sites and DNS filtering methods are free and effective. Armor adds vulnerability scanning, IoT device protection, and richer content categorisation if you want those features.
Open the Nighthawk app โ Security โ Netgear Armor
If your router supports Armor, you'll see it in the Security tab.
Activate a trial or subscription
Activate Armor (trial available on most recent Nighthawk models). Log in with your Netgear account.
Go to Armor โ Parental Controls โ Content Filtering
Create a profile for your child's devices. Under Content Filtering, block the Video Streaming or Social Media category, or block YouTube specifically.
Method 4: DNS Filtering on Netgear (Recommended as a Second Layer)
Log into routerlogin.net
Same as Method 1, Step 1.
Go to Internet โ DNS Addresses
Navigate to Basic โ Internet (or Advanced โ WAN Setup โ DNS Servers). Look for DNS Address fields.
Enter CleanBrowsing Family DNS
Replace existing DNS entries:
- Primary DNS:
185.228.168.168 - Secondary DNS:
185.228.169.168Click Apply.
Restart the router
Go to Advanced โ Administration โ Reboot to apply the new DNS settings.
How Kids Bypass This
Admin password guessing: The default Netgear admin password is password โ one of the most commonly guessed passwords. If you haven't changed it, do so immediately. Go to Advanced โ Administration โ Set Password and set a strong unique password.
Mobile data bypass: Router-level blocking doesn't affect mobile data. Use Screen Time or Family Link for device coverage off your home Wi-Fi.
Guest network: If your Netgear router has a guest Wi-Fi network enabled, it may not inherit the Block Sites rules. Test this โ or disable the guest network. Admin panel โ Wireless โ Guest Network โ turn off guest network.
Connecting via Ethernet without Wi-Fi: If your child connects via a wired Ethernet cable, router-level blocking still applies (Block Sites applies to all traffic through the router). This is actually an advantage โ wired connections are still covered.
VPN apps: A VPN bypasses DNS filtering. Block VPN app installation via Screen Time (iPhone) or Family Link (Android).
Counter-Measures
Change the admin password from "password" immediately. This is the number one vulnerability on Netgear routers. Set a unique, strong password that only you know.
Block Sites + DNS filtering = two layers: Block Sites works at the router application layer. DNS filtering works at the DNS resolution layer. Both need to be bypassed for YouTube to work โ much harder.
Review the Netgear logs: Admin panel โ Administration โ Logs shows a record of blocked sites and access attempts. Check it occasionally to see if your blocks are being tested.
Lock the admin panel to your devices: Advanced โ Administration โ Remote Management โ ensure remote management is OFF. Also consider enabling the option to restrict admin access to a specific IP address (your computer's IP) so the admin panel can't be accessed from your child's device.
