How to Block YouTube on Apple TV (tvOS, 2026)
Block YouTube on Apple TV using Screen Time on tvOS. Pairs with iOS Family Sharing for remote management. Free, no extra apps needed. Updated for 2026.
What You'll Need
- The Apple TV (4th generation or later — HD or 4K)
- Your Apple TV remote (Siri Remote)
- Your iPhone or iPad (to manage Screen Time remotely via Family Sharing)
- About 10 minutes
Apple TV runs tvOS and, since tvOS 14, supports Screen Time — the same parental control system built into iPhone and iPad. When connected to Family Sharing, you can manage your child's Apple TV from your iPhone without touching the TV at all.
Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD — same steps
Screen Time is supported on Apple TV HD (4th generation, 2015) and Apple TV 4K (all generations: 2017, 2021, 2022). The older Apple TV 3rd generation does not support Screen Time.
Part 1: Add Apple TV to Family Sharing
Before managing Screen Time remotely, the Apple TV needs to be signed in with your child's Apple ID under your Family group.
Set up Family Sharing (if not already done)
On your iPhone: Settings → tap your name → Family Sharing → Add Member → Create a Child Account. Enter their date of birth. This creates a child Apple ID linked to your family.
Sign in on the Apple TV with your child's Apple ID
On the Apple TV: Settings → Users and Accounts → Add New User → sign in with their Apple ID.
Set their account as the default user
Settings → Users and Accounts → select their name → Use This Account. The Apple TV now runs under their Apple ID, which is supervised by Family Sharing.
Part 2: Enable Screen Time on Apple TV
On your iPhone, open Settings → Screen Time
Tap Screen Time → select your child's name (if managing via Family Sharing, their device list includes Apple TV).
Turn on Screen Time for their Apple TV
You should see your child's Apple TV listed as a device. Tap it → Turn On Screen Time.
Set a Screen Time Passcode
On your iPhone: Settings → Screen Time → Use Screen Time Passcode → enter a 4-digit code your child doesn't know. This passcode is required to change any Screen Time settings and to override restrictions on the Apple TV.
Part 3: Block YouTube on the Apple TV
Open Screen Time for their Apple TV on your iPhone
Settings → Screen Time → [child's name] → [Apple TV device].
Go to Content & Privacy Restrictions
Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions → toggle On.
Restrict app installation and deletion
Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases → set Installing Apps to Don't Allow and Deleting Apps to Don't Allow. This prevents your child from installing a new YouTube client or removing restrictions-enforcing apps.
Block YouTube by app rating
Tap Allowed Apps (or Content Restrictions → Apps) → set the maximum allowed app rating to 4+ or 9+. YouTube is rated 17+ — it won't appear in the App Store and can't be launched under these rating restrictions.
Delete the YouTube app if already installed
On the Apple TV, navigate to the YouTube app icon → press and hold the Select button on the Siri Remote → select Delete from the menu. With app installation blocked, it can't be reinstalled.
Part 4: Block YouTube in the Apple TV Browser
Apple TV does not have a visible user-facing web browser — there is no Safari on tvOS. YouTube via a web browser is not a risk on Apple TV.
However, some apps embed web views that can navigate to youtube.com. The most reliable defence against this is DNS filtering at the router level.
Part 5: Set Content Restrictions
Set allowed TV show and movie ratings
Content & Privacy → TV Shows → set to TV-G or TV-Y (young children) or TV-PG (older children). This restricts what content can be played in the Apple TV+ app and other Apple TV channels.
Restrict explicit music and podcasts
Content & Privacy → Music, Podcasts, News & Workouts → set to Clean.
Set Downtime (optional)
Screen Time → Downtime → toggle On → set hours when the Apple TV should be unavailable (e.g. after 8pm and before 7am). During Downtime, apps outside the Always Allowed list won't open.
Part 6: Add DNS Filtering as a Network Backup
Change DNS on the Apple TV
Settings → Network → Wi-Fi → select your network → Configure DNS → Manual → enter:
- Primary:
185.228.168.168(CleanBrowsing Family) - Secondary:
185.228.169.168
This blocks youtube.com at the network level on this Apple TV.
Or set DNS at the router

How Kids Bypass This
Screen Time passcode recovery via Apple ID: Apple allows Screen Time passcode recovery using the Apple ID that set up the passcode. If your child knows your Apple ID email and password, they can reset the Screen Time passcode. Secure your Apple ID with a strong password and two-factor authentication, and don't store it anywhere accessible to your child.
Switching Apple ID on the Apple TV: If your child can access Settings on the Apple TV and switch to a different Apple ID (one that isn't supervised), Screen Time restrictions won't apply. Prevent this: Content & Privacy → Account Changes → Don't Allow.
Screen mirroring: Your child may try to AirPlay content from a phone to the Apple TV. If YouTube is blocked on the phone (via Screen Time), this gap is closed. Block YouTube on all their devices, not just the Apple TV.
Casting from non-Apple devices: Apps on Android phones can cast YouTube to Apple TV via AirPlay or compatible apps. Block YouTube on every device they use, and use router DNS filtering as the network-wide backstop.
Counter-Measures
Apple TV with Screen Time is one of the best-locked TV devices available: The combination of Family Sharing, Screen Time, and App Store rating restrictions is comprehensive. Unlike Android TV or webOS, there's no hidden browser and app installation is tightly controlled.
Manage everything from your iPhone: Once Family Sharing is set up, you never need to touch the Apple TV to manage restrictions. All Screen Time controls sync from your iPhone — including approving or denying app download requests in real time.
Layer with router DNS: Even a locked Apple TV can receive AirPlay content from other devices. Router DNS filtering ensures youtube.com can't load on any device on your network, covering these edge cases. See the DNS filtering guide.
Review Screen Time reports: Your iPhone shows Screen Time reports for the Apple TV — which apps were opened and for how long. Check weekly.
